Conservation is a process that ensures the safety and longevity of artefacts. It consists of
stabilization, preservation, remedial treatments and preventive measures.
The Conservation Section is located in the former residential quarters of the palace. The space is
divided into dedicated rooms, each designed for a specific conservation function. While adapting the
historic structure for contemporary use, its architectural integrity has been carefully preserved.
The conservation space has been designed as a flexible workspace, equipped with movable furniture
and equipment to accommodate the treatment of objects of varying sizes and material
compositions.
The Conservation Section is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including stereo microscopes,
high-end DSLR cameras and lenses, specialized conservation-grade lighting for photographic
documentation, a low-pressure suction table, and other essential equipment. All materials and
treatment methods employed in the conservation space conform to internationally accepted
conservation standards, ensuring the highest level of professional care for the museum's
collections.
The conservation section has bought Multi-spectral imaging setup and is currently engaged in a collaborative study of pigments and their application techniques in Mewar paintings along with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
The exhibition 'Picturing Place: Painted and Printed Maps at Udaipur court' brought 32 architectural, topographical and revenue maps dating to 19th and early 20th centuries from the collection of Maharana of Mewar Research Institute (MMRI) on display. These maps had been kept rolled or folded for long periods of time and had a variety of deterioration issues. The dimension, material and technique and condition of each map varied to a great extent and hence required customized conservation treatments plans.
Around 40 Mewar paintings were also conserved and mounted for the re-curated Paintings gallery exhibition 'Portraits, kings and landscapes: The practise of painting in Udaipur' under the Ministry of Culture grant in 2023. Conservation, mounting and framing of these paintings whose sizes varied from very small (approx. 4” in width) to extra ordinarily large ones (approx. 60” in width) was undertaken at the laboratory.
The Mewar paintings collection from the museum dating from the 17th century onwards has been conserved for an international exhibition which travelled to the National Museum of Asian Art, Washington D C and the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio in 2022-2023. Rarely had the conservation of these paintings on such a scale been undertaken anywhere in the world.
